Performance modelling of timetables on the West Coast Mainline

West Midland Trains operates the regional services in the Birmingham region and semi-fast and stopping trains on the West Coast Mainline connecting London Euston with cities such as Birmingham and Crewe. In order to improve the robustness of its services on the WCML, WMR asked trenolab to evaluate the impact on delays of new timetables that included different strategies for the rostering of trainsets. The main challenge in the study was the complexity of operations on the WCML, one of the busiest corridors in Europe, shared by WMR with the long-distance trains connecting London with major centres such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, North Wales and Birmingham.
