Performance Modelling of the Rightsizing of Stockholm Central

Strategic Infrastructure Assessment for Sweden’s Busiest Railway Hub

Stockholm Central serves as Sweden’s primary railway hub, handling hundreds of trains daily. This critical infrastructure node faces increasing capacity demands while requiring enhanced operational robustness to maintain reliable services across the national rail network. trenolab conducted a comprehensive performance modeling study to assess the impact of proposed major infrastructure modifications at Stockholm Central. Our analysis focused on evaluating how the rightsizing scheme would affect operational robustness and overall system performance. The project employed advanced stochastic simulation methodology, beginning with detailed modeling of the current infrastructure configuration. After thorough validation using real operational data, we modified the model to represent the proposed future scheme and conducted extensive testing of various scenarios. Our simulations evaluated performance under both current and anticipated future timetables, providing critical insights into capacity utilization, delay propagation, and service reliability. This analysis enabled stakeholders to make informed decisions about infrastructure investments while understanding the operational implications of the proposed modifications.
