Freight Strategy Study on the Dovre Line
Integrated service and infrastructure planning for the Dovre Line, R2033
The Norwegian Railway Directorate and Bane NOR are developing a strategic plan for improving the efficiency of freight railway services. The aim is to reduce the environmental impact of road transport and related greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the amount of goods transported by rail.
The trenolab team contributed to this plan by identifying the most effective infrastructure and timetable configurations for the development of the long-term freight strategy on the Dovre Line.
To identify the winning configuration trenolab developed multiple timetable scenarios based on the daily freight demand inputs provided for year 2033. The analysis of operations identified the required investments (new and extended passing sections, additional block signals), as well as the operating costs and service quality impacts of alternative investments in infrastructure. This data was later used in a cost-benefit analysis to identify the most beneficial alternatives for the Dovre Line. Finally, the best proposal was validated using microscopic simulation with trenissimo.
